COMMUNICATION

  • Seed Central FORUM
Networking events with featured speakers (monthy, 2nd Thursday of the month)

  • Seed Central SCIENCE
Research & technology presentations (2nd Thursday of February, May and September)

  • Seed Central BRAINSTORMING
Brainstorming sessions on local solutions to shared needs (2nd Thursday of February, May and September)

  • Seed Central PICNICS
An opportunity for UC Davis students to meet seed company researchers over a simple picnic. Everyone brings his/her own lunch and gets a chance to talk very concretely and in a completely informal setting about research careers in the seed industry.

  • Seed Central GUIDANCE
The Seed Central team arranges topical meetings on campus for its members. Whether you are looking to meet a specialist in a specific area of science or would like you human resources team to better understand how to tap into the UC Davis talent pipeline, contact us and we will make the necessary arrangements.

FACILITATION

  • Facilitation of sponsored research

The Plant and Seed Sciences Partnership Program (PSPP) is coordinated by the Seed Biotechnology Center (SBC) within the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis).

The PSPP is a Corporate Affiliate Partnership Program (CAPP) designed to facilitate interaction between UC Davis and Seed Central and its members.

The PSPP offers three tiers of participation customized to the research and educational objectives of Seed Central and its members:

    • Tier 1 offers Seed Central and its members a mechanism to collaborate with UC Davis to create and deliver educational opportunities and networking activities focused on issues relevant to the seed industry.
    • Click here to register to receive information about future research consortia

Tier 2 provides a mechanism for creating corporate consortia to sponsor and conduct collaborative research following scope of work collectively agreed upon by the participating members and the University, which may accelerate commercialization of new discoveries.
    • Tier 3 allows Seed Central and each of its members to take advantage of the PSPP corporate relations services to facilitate individual sponsored research agreements, fund projects specific to their respective interests and speed technology transfer.

The Plant and Seed Sciences Partnership Program has received final UC Davis approval on October 8th, 2012.

Attracted by UC Davis' leadership position in plant and agricultural sciences, several companies have expressed an interest in the creation on the Davis campus of a  collaborative research lab with industry partners where
UC Davis scientists and students, joined by industry scientists, would conduct pre-competitive research
to translate genomic knowledge into useful phenotypes.

Among the interested industry partners are large, medium and small seed companies, involved in a broad range of horticultural and agronomic crops. Other interested partners are active in genomics, breeding technologies, seed technology, and contract research services.

This project is strongly supported by the leadership of
UC Davis and the College of Agriculture & Environmental Sciences.

The diagrams of the CoRe Lab show:
    - the project's ambition to attract a wide variety of companies in order to foster a dynamic and stimulating environment with rich networking opportunities; and
    - the campus' strong and diverse scientific and technological environment relevant to the research focus of the planned lab.

This project has been discussed over the last 12 months with some 30 companies in California, the US and overseas, both in one-on-one meetings and at two public brainstorming sessions. Considerable feedback has been obtained.

In May 2012, the CoRe Lab Task Force has developed a detailed survey to obtain a deeper and detailed understanding of the needs and expectations of industry partners interested in the project.

The survey can be viewed and completed by clicking HERE.

All companies interested in being associated with this project, short, medium or long term, physically or remotely, are invited to complete the survey.

For questions about the survey, please contact:

  • Bringing science to market faster

The ambition of Seed Central is to create contribute to bridging the gap between UC Davis science and the marketplace through various communication and facilitation features that will "bring science to market faster" for the benefit of all parties.

  • The ScienceFinder

There is an enormous amount of science and technology at UC Davis, but the instruments to find the science or technology you need (see on the RESOURCES page on this website) are not as efficient and fast as they could. We are working with the UC Davis Office of Research to improve these instruments. In May 2013, the Brainstorming Session will focus on this issue.

ATTRACTION

  • Attraction of new seed and seed-related companies to the Seed Central region.
  • Facilitation services, in cooperation with local city and county governments.

As of spring 2012, two companies have indicated that they will establish their headquarter in Davis
in connection with the planned CoRe lab.
